Hotel Hohenwart in South Tyrol

When calm settles over the Hotel Hohenwart – a special time in Schenna

In just a few days, the last guests will depart from the Hotel Hohenwart. Afterwards, a very special sense of calm fills the corridors and spaces of the hotel. A stillness you can feel as you walk through the building, when doors close more softly and the house seems to pause for a moment. At times, it almost feels a little mysterious – and yet this is exactly when Schenna reveals its quiet charm.

Before the break truly begins, the Hohenwart team is still fully engaged for two more days. Everything is tidied, cleaned, covered and carefully prepared. Every movement is considered, every room left with care. It is the quiet conclusion of an intense season – and at the same time, the beginning of something new.

The Hohenwart team leaders ensure a very special holiday experience in South Tyrol.
The Mair family has been running Hotel Hohenwart for three generations.

A shared journey that brings people together

Waiting for the Hohenwart team is a well-earned reward: at the end of the season, we traditionally set off together on a two-day trip – this year to Modena and Mantua. Two cities rich in history, culinary delights and Italian lifestyle.

Alongside guided tours and fine food, there is time for what often falls short in everyday hotel life: conversation, shared laughter and relaxed evenings. Friendships deepen, new connections form – and the Hohenwart team spirit continues to grow. These shared moments accompany us into the next season in South Tyrol.

A farewell for now – everyone following their own path

After the trip, it is time to say goodbye – at least for a while. Some of our team members who come from further away – especially our housekeeping staff and dishwashers, as well as colleagues from other departments – will spend a few weeks in their home country, surrounded by family, friends and familiar routines.

Others enjoy the quieter weeks here in South Tyrol. Hubert and Nadia plan to explore the South Tyrolean mountains as usual, while others consciously use this time to be with family and friends or to take care of things that often get pushed aside during the season. And some – such as Lisa, Sonja or Robert – use the break to discover the world, explore new countries and gather fresh inspiration.

The Hotel Hohenwart remains in motion

The Hotel Hohenwart in Schenna is never completely still. Even between the seasons, work continues – albeit at a gentler pace than during peak season. Doris holds the fort in the office and is happy to continue answering your requests personally, whether by phone or email.

At the same time, craftsmen bring renewed life into the hotel. Alongside smaller maintenance works, this Winter we are dedicating special attention to a project close to our hearts: the careful redesign of our Labers rooms in the House Traube.

30 years of Labers – tradition with a future in a South Tyrolean hotel

Hard to believe, but true: our popular Labers family rooms are celebrating their 30th anniversary. Of course, they are no longer exactly as they were in 1996. Over the years, they have been lovingly modernised and adapted to the Hohenwart concept – from air conditioning and new bathrooms to carefully selected furnishings curated by Ms Christine.

One thing, however, has deliberately remained: the beautiful South Tyrolean solid wood furniture that has always defined the character of the Labers rooms and the Hohenwart architecture. These pieces have become part of our identity – cherished, iconic and unmistakably Hohenwart.

This Winter, they receive a gentle touch-up: our local carpenter from Dorf Tirol restores their natural beauty, allowing them to blend harmoniously into the updated room and lighting design – contemporary, warm and with that familiar retro charm our guests so appreciate, and which forms an integral part of our South Tyrolean hotel philosophy.

The result is the new, spacious Labers Junior Suites – a harmonious combination of South Tyrolean tradition, modern comfort and sustainable architecture in South Tyrol. Not everything has to be brand new; sometimes, it is enough to thoughtfully reinterpret what already works well. As Mr Mair senior once wisely said: “Those who do not move with the times are moved by time.”

Looking ahead: planning, dialogue and anticipation – a major hotel renovation in South Tyrol

While work continues within the hotel, the Mair family is already working on new plans. Over the coming years, a major renovation of the Main House is planned, to be carried out in several stages. The planning process is well underway, guided by the principles of the Hohenwart architecture: respect for what exists and anticipation for what is yet to come. However, for now, the details remain a carefully guarded secret.

At the same time, the design philosophy of the Hotel Hohenwart continues to evolve. From Spring onwards, the Hotel Hohenwart corporate design will gradually appear in a new look. Attentive guests may already have noticed the first subtle changes.

When the Hotel Hohenwart slowly awakens in Spring

At the beginning of March, the Hotel Hohenwart will begin to awaken from its Winter rest. The first team members will return from their break and start preparations, bringing the house back to life.

During this period, the Hohenwart team leaders also meet to discuss key updates, share experiences and exchange ideas for the upcoming season. This open dialogue is especially important to us – because only together can we continue to grow and refine our services.

Before the new season officially begins, there is one more special moment: a shared celebration. New team members get to know their colleagues, long-standing staff share stories from their Winter break, and Mr Mair presents all the upcoming projects. By the end, everyone is informed, connected and ready for the new start.

A new season with fresh energy

And then, finally, the moment arrives: on March 21, we’ll begin the 2026 season with new energy. With great ideas, familiar faces and the warmth that makes Hotel Hohenwart so special.

These weeks between seasons are a valuable time for reflection, creativity and anticipation. A time when a lot happens behind the scenes – quietly, but with a great deal of heart.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon to the Hotel Hohenwart in Schenna.
