Our retreat in the mountains

A glimpse into the farming life of the past

As wonderful as the comforts at Hohenwart are, sometimes you simply need a place where the simplicity and authenticity of earlier times can be felt again. For us, this wish came true over twenty years ago with the purchase of the Gsteier mountain farm.

Experience Gsteier

Around the Gasthof Gsteier inn you will find our sheep grazing, chickens scratching the ground and pigs playing in the mud. The fountain murmurs, the mill wheel turns, and in the garden grows everything that later finds its way onto your plate - at Hohenwart and, of course, when you visit the farm during a hike. Mr Mair regularly accompanies guests personally on a gentle walk from Egger to Gsteier. Those interested in culture and history should not miss a visit to the old barn, where over the years we have gathered an impressive collection of historic farming tools The farm museum is open and freely accessible at all times.

I love how Gsteier keeps bringing us back to our roots.

A place to feel at home

Authentic, honest, warm: Gsteier is not a programme point, but a place of quiet retreat for people and animals alike, for anyone wishing to experience a piece of genuine South Tyrol. The farm is located high above the wild gorge of the Naif Valley, at 1,380 metres, and can also be easily reached by hikers via the mid-station of the Meran 2000 cable car.

Our connection to nature is also a central theme at Hohenwart itself. Here you can find out more about our sustainability concept.
