Scenic E-bike rides in Schenna: through Merano and Environs

South Tyrol on two wheels

There are moments when riding an E-bike in Schenna feels almost like gliding. Within just a few minutes, the landscape changes: orchards, vineyards, valleys, rivers, farms, woodland, alpine pastures and viewpoints. That is precisely its charm. You are not simply following a route. You are experiencing how Merano and environs changes with every metre of altitude.

Around Schenna, there are around 200 kilometres of marked cycling routes. Some lead gently along the Passer river or through apple orchards, others climb towards the mountains on forest tracks and panoramic roads. With an E-bike, many places come within easier reach without losing the pleasure of the ride. You still feel the movement, but there is more room for the view, for a pause and for a worthwhile stop along the way.

Routes around Schenna: from gentle to sporty

Those who prefer to take things at a gentler pace will find a good option on the Passeiertal Valley cycle path. The route leads from Schenna via the Riffianerweg towards St. Leonhard in Passeier, follows the course of the Passer and is well developed. For guests who enjoy being active without seeking an alpine challenge, it is one of the more accessible routes around Schenna.

The ride becomes sportier when the route continues from the Passeiertal Valley cycle path up the hairpin bends at Schweinssteg towards Tall and the picturesque, rustic hamlet of Prenn. There, the mountain inns Hiaslbauer and Gasthof Hochwies offer two rewarding places to pause, with South Tyrolean cuisine, sunny terraces and wide mountain views.

Those who wish to continue can head towards the Hirzer region. From Prenn, the route leads towards Klammeben and on to Gompm Alm, a welcoming alpine hut that is well suited to a break. Anyone with time and energy can take a detour to Stafell Alm, another quiet mountain stop. From the sunny terrace, the panoramic view and the sense of calm make it ideal for a moment’s rest. Traditional South Tyrolean alpine dishes are served here: simple, good and exactly what you want after a few metres of climbing.

To shorten the ascent from the Passeiertal Valley, it is possible to take the Hirzer cable car from Saltaus to Prenn.

Hohenwart as a bike base

For guests of Hotel Hohenwart, Schenna is an ideal starting point for scenic E-bike rides. Our in-house rental service offers seven current full-suspension E-bikes in four sizes. Guests who bring their own bikes can store them safely in the guest bike room. E-bike charging facilities, a small bike workshop, helmets, route maps and personal recommendations are also available.

Good advice is especially valuable. Not every route suits every day. Sometimes half a day on two wheels is enough before the afternoon continues in the VistaSpa, on the terrace or in the garden.

Those who prefer to explore the region together can join a guided E-bike tour. At Hohenwart, tours are offered weekly, accompanied by our bike guide Fips. He knows the routes, finds the most beautiful views and knows where a stop is truly worthwhile.

Arriving after the ride

E-bike riding in Schenna brings together movement, landscape and moments of enjoyment along the way. You ride out into Merano and environs, collect altitude, views and perhaps a pair of pleasantly tired legs. Afterwards, Hohenwart is waiting: a place where the day can end quietly, with time to relax.

What remains is not the number of kilometres, but the landscape itself: the scent of apple orchards, the light over Merano and a well-earned pause on an alpine pasture.

Experiencing the mountains around Schenna

The cable cars around Schenna open up more than paths. They open up perspectives. They connect altitudes, landscapes and moods: from the vineyards above Merano to the alpine pastures and peaks of South Tyrol.

For guests of Hotel Hohenwart, they are a natural part of the stay: as a starting point for hikes, as a relaxed alternative on warm days or as an invitation to discover the mountain world of Merano and environs.

Whether alone, as a couple or with the family: from Schenna, the mountains are within easy reach.
