South Tyrol Sustainability Seal

South Tyrol Sustainability Seal

In South Tyrol a plaque is given to destinations and accommodation establishments actively committed to a sustainable future: the South Tyrol Sustainability Seal. Based upon the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, it gives recognition to en-tities in the tourism industry that ensure the protection of nature and people. Those people who, with concrete measures, tirelessly contribute to making South Tyrol a more sustainable place. The road to sustainability is long. There are, indeed, three Seal’s levels. Each level needs different criteria to be met. The third – which is the highest - corresponds to the GSTC certification and it is thus globally recognized.

Your sustainable feel-good place

For us, sustainability means creating a place where people and nature thrive together in harmony. A place that offers peace and strength to both our guests and our staff, and where they are always happy to return. We aim to guarantee our guests a carefree and comfortable holiday with a high quality of service, while we equally assume social and ecological responsibility. Therefore, we have been calculating our CO₂ footprint annually since 2022 which is 15.9kg CO₂ per overnight stay and we are constantly striving to improve. Our efforts include measures in the areas of energy and resource consumption, local sourcing, mobility and social sustainability.

01 – Resource consumption

We aim to protect nature by consuming only what is truly necessary for us. Resources such as water, construction materials and all kinds of consumer goods are precious. Hence, we strive to use them responsibly by implementing numerous measures aimed to minimise our ecological footprint. From energy-efficient heating and cooling systems to water-saving sanitary installations and the use of regional products in our cuisine and beyond. We are committed to prove that offering the highest quality of service and comfort for our guests will not conflict with environmental protection.

Energy

  • We cover our heat and electricity requirements with three combined heat and power plants totaling 96kW. In addition, we produce electricity from solar energy using our 87kW peak photovoltaic system. If we need additional electricity, we supply 100% of it using South Tyrolean green energy from Selgas.
  • Thanks to our smart hotel operating system from myGekko, we can optimise our electricity consumption in all buildings and automatically adjust our lighting to the brightness of the day. It also enables us to monitor and regulate our heating and cooling systems and technical installations such as swimming pools, ventilation systems, saunas and rooms at all times. If faults or anomalies occur, we can recognise and rectify them immediately.
  • The House Christine and Traube are equipped with a climate ceiling which enables us to chill the rooms via a passive cooling system. To further protect the environment, we have programmed the blinds and awnings with the smart hotel operating system from myGekko so that they provide shade from 1 PM to 6.30 PM, if rooms are unoccupied.

Water

  • We have been using water reducers since 1994. We collect rainwater to water our green areas.
  • We are proud of our potable water which is of excellent quality. You are welcome to help yourself from any tap in the hotel. We are also happy to serve chilled natural spring water with the evening menu. In our shop we offer a variety of reusable drinking bottles.

Furniture

  • Not only with food, but also with our furnishings, we focus on regional cycles and ensure that the product life cycle is as long as possible. Our local partners for our construction and architectural projects include the Katto Architects from Lana, the construction company Roland Gufler from the Passeiertal Valley and the carpentry and timber construction company Brida from Dorf Tirol. Our electrician is Elektropoint by Valentin Pichler and our hydraulics are done by Atzwanger and Luis Pircher (all from the surrounding area).
  • The longevity of our inventory here at Hohenwart is unrivalled. We have always paid close attention to immaculate quality when purchasing new goods, a virtue that allows us to still have in use numerous silver trays for decades. Moreover, we strongly emphasize timeless elegance in our furnishings rather than following short-termed trends, and we prefer pieces made from solid wood as well as the highest-quality of fabrics.
  • During renovations, old pieces of furniture find a new purpose in our Teamhouse, are sold at the flea market, or donated to charity.
  • It is important to us to promote local producers and businesses. Hence, we warmly invite you to stroll through our many shop windows in the corridor from the Main House to House Traube or House Christine and discover the many handcrafts of Schenna.
  • We also give our best when it comes to our green spaces: in our paradisiacal hotel parc we avoid peat and, as long as the pest pressure allows it, use only organic pesticides and fertilizers.
  • As they have a favourable cooling and insulating effect and, in addition, a beneficial impact on biodiversity, since they function as important green islands for microorganisms and birds, we have planted greenery on the roofs wherever the conditions allow. For example, the roofs of the House Traube and House Christine as well as the garages of the Main House and House Christine have been extensively greened. We have intensive green roofs on the VistaSpa, while the roof of our panoramic sauna is extensively greened. All other paved areas at the hotel are covered with local natural paving, while the Main House has a traditional saddle roof.
  • We source cut flowers seasonally from our own gardens or neighbouring farms. Would you like to surprise your loved ones with a bouquet of flowers? We will be happy to organise one from the Waldner nursery in Schenna.

Hygiene and cleaning

We use natural cleaning agents not only for the sake of the environment but also for our own health. Would you like to do renounce the daily cleaning and thus support us in our sustainability efforts? With pleasure! Simply hang the "No cleaning today" sign on the door or contact the reception. The environment will thank you!

  • While frequently replacing chemical with mechanical solutions, we exclusively use refillable bottles of cleaning agents that are awarded with the EU Ecolabel. The use of the smart dosing technology with concentrated products allows us to reduce the transport of water to the lowest possible level, which means that 80% less water is transported by rail, road and air. CO₂ emissions are reduced accordingly. In addition, up to 95kg of plastic can be avoided per multiFILL cartridge.
  • The window surfaces are cleaned with water vapour. Moreover, for the deep cleaning of our rooms, we use dry vapor steam cleaners.
  • We exclusively use EcoNatural toilet paper and cosmetic tissues. These are made from Fiberpack®, a raw material obtained by recycling the cellulose fibres from drink cartons.
  • We wash our table linen and towels ourselves! We have decided to install an in-house hotel laundry which covers approximately 50% of our laundry, to avoid unnecessary emissions due to transport.

SPA

  • Ask for our herbal-based organic cosmetics from Plima Südtirol and the certified natural cosmetics from Dr Barbara Boos and TEAM DR JOSEPH.
  • In our saltwater pools, we use a skin-friendly chlorine-salt mixture.

Equipment hire

Sharing is caring. Borrow a backpack, poles, and maps from us for your hiking excursions, as well as a buggy or back carrier for the little ones, mountain bikes (e-MTB for a fee) and helmets.

Waste-management

  • The best waste is the waste that is not produced! We warmly invite you to bring your own bathing shoes. You will find a spa basket with towels and bathrobes in your room.
  • In the garages you will find bins for waste separation.

02 – Culinary delights

We believe that excellent, high-quality food is integral to any great holiday. The ingredients used by the kitchen team led by chef Hannes Stuffer come from our own production wherever possible or directly from the region. This way we aim to support regional cycles and to protect the environment by reducing transportation routes. Click here to find out more.

Delicacies from our own production

  • Farm-raised lamb has a long tradition at Hohenwart: we have been producing lamb at our own mountain farm at 1.375m since 2002. Our flock counts around 40 ewes and 2 breeding rams. We ensure species-appropriate animal husbandry: to give the animals maximum freedom of movement, thus enabling them to exercise their natural social behaviour, we keep them in large free ranging groups at the farm, while they spend their summers on high alpine pastures above 2.000m.
  • Craft-brewed beer from the family-owned Pfefferlechner brewery.
  • Herbs fresh from the hotel garden which we als4o use to aromatise our oils.
  • Homemade apple juice and dried apple snacks from our very own fields. Moreover, we dry the kakis from the Pfefferlechner farm ourselves.
  • In autumn we serve fresh grape juice from our own vineyard in Schenna.
  • Our kitchen team crafts delicious blackcurrant, raspberry and elderberry juice for you as well as the syrup for our Hohenwart Spritz. In addition, all of our chutneys, compotes and 30-40% of our jams are homemade.

Regional and fresh from the farmer

Seasonal fruit and vegetables simply taste better! Every season has its typical flavours and we are only too happy to express them in our dishes.

  • We source our seasonal fruit from local farms: blueberries from the Neuhof farm and raspberries from the Trittgasslhof farm in Schenna. Apples, plums, kaki, grapes, and cherries come from the Pfefferlechner farm in Lana.
  • Apple vinegar from the Pfefferlechner farm in Lana.
  • Our Hohenwart honey is harvested by the Hiesler farm in Hafling.
  • Our fruit spreads with a high fruit content (approx. 75%) and without artificial additives come from the fruit manufacturer Alpe Pragas in Prags and chocolate creams from Oberhöller in the Sarntal Valley.
  • Fresh milk from the dairy cooperative in Meran, other dairy products from Mila Bozen, butter from the Algunder alpine dairy and Knollhof in Lappach, cheese from selected farms: Boarbichl in Schenna, David's Goashof in Lajen, Gamsegghof in Graun in the Vinschgau Valley, Moar in Margen in Terenten, Capriz in Vintl, Psairer Bergkäserei, Eggemoa in Selva dei Molini, Lüch da Pcëi in St. Kassian, Degust in Vahrn and from the “Genussbunker” by Hubert Stockner in St. Lorenzen.
  • Our coffee comes from Alps Coffee in Partschins.
  • 70% of our wine list is made up of South Tyrolean producers, and it is a matter of the heart to promote young winegrowers with their unique ideas.

Vegetarian / vegan

We are convinced that a good holiday starts with a good meal prepared with first-class ingredients. There is a vegetarian alternative for every course on our evening menu. We can also prepare vegan alternatives for you on request.

Our efforts to reduce food waste

With us, you can feast in abundance! Sustainability and respectful handling of food play a major role in our kitchen, which is why we focus on a holistic utilization of food in order to avoid overproduction and reduce unnecessary food waste. Our leftovers from the dessert buffet are donated to the retirement home in Schenna, while old bread becomes a special treat to our chickens at our mountain inn Gsteier.

03 – Mobility

44% of greenhouse gas emissions in South Tyrol can be attributed to transport. We, therefore, would like to contribute to reducing these emissions by promoting e-mobility, hiking shuttles or public transport. We want to offer our guests the opportunity to consciously organise their holiday with environmentally friendly and still convenient solutions. For planning your journey to South Tyrol, please feel free to contact the reception for advice!

Arrival

  • We will be happy to organise a transfer from the Bozen or Meran railway station to the hotel.
  • Airport transfer: Book a reliable and convenient transfer from Bolzano airport right to your hotel in Schenna at the special price of only 15.00 Euros per person.
  • Your luggage (suitcases, sports equipment etc.) will be collected by a courier service and delivered directly to the hotel. Hence, you can go on holiday carefree!

On-site mobility

  • We are passionate supporters of e-mobility: our garages are equipped with 5 e-charging stations and there are also 2 electric cars in our fleet. Would you like to test drive our Audi E-Tron for a day? You are very welcome to do so! Please contact the reception (100.00 Euros rental fee per day). There is also an AlpsGo! car-sharing e-car in the centre of Schenna, which can be booked via app.
  • We offer the South Tyrol Guest Pass, which is a free ticket for all public transportation lines in South Tyrol.
  • Some hiking destinations are not easily accessible by public transport. Hence, we offer our guests free guided tours with transportation included as well as hiking shuttles several times a week.
  • Would you like to explore South Tyrol by bike or e-bike? Feel free to do so! Thanks to our in-house e-bike renting service you can choose between 7 bikes in 4 different sizes. If you’d rather pedal yourself, then we have the right mountain bike as well for you to rent for free. Furthermore, you are welcome to bring your own bikes and we will store them safely in the bike room designated for our guests.

04 – Social sustainability and employees

  • We train apprentices! In 2024, we employ 8 apprentices and trainees in service, in the kitchen and at the reception (4 apprentices for almost the entire opening period, 4 trainees in the summer months).
  • As of June 2024, we have 79 staff members, 39 of whom are women. 50% of our managers are also women.
  • Regulated working hours are guaranteed, and we offer flexible models for families. We are happy to support our staff in their personal development through individually tailored training plans.
  • We offer 40 free accommodations in the Hohenwart team house, which was renovated in 2023, equipped with WiFi, a community kitchen and common areas. Moreover, our staff is fully catered (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
  • Other benefits include the use of our fitness studio, 50% discount on a stay for 2 people in a fellow Belvita Leading Wellnesshotel, 30% discount on spa treatments, 20% discount on our cosmetic products, 10% discount on our products from the in-house wine cellar. Moreover, with the Schenna CrewCard: JOB & FUN IN SCHENNA, our team also receives many discounts at leisure providers, shops, restaurants, and huts in Schenna.
  • We support our team with their personal retirement plans through contributing to their supplementary pension funds as well as with health care through participation in the mySanitour health fund.
