Mountain biking in Merano and surroundings – A bike holiday among palms, Alpine pastures and panoramas

With our bike guide Sepp “Fips” to the best biking spots around Schenna

The Merano region is one of South Tyrol’s most diverse cycling destinations. Between Alpine landscapes and Mediterranean flair, you’ll find an extensive network of over 180 km of routes – perfect for both sporty mountain bikers and relaxed e-bike tours.

Joining you on your bike tour: Sepp “Fips”, your personal bike guide. A true local, he knows not only the classic routes but also hidden trails, unique viewpoints and useful technical tips. “I grew up here and have tested many of the trails myself. I’m happy to share this experience with our guests,” says Fips. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, he’ll take you on the perfect ride with competence and enthusiasm.

Mountain biking paradise Schenna – Cycling at all altitudes

What makes Schenna so special is its exceptional variety of landscapes: from the valley with apple orchards and palms to high-Alpine trails at over 2,500 m. “In hardly any other region can you switch so quickly from Mediterranean scenery to Alpine terrain,” explains Fips. “That makes the tours incredibly varied”. He particularly appreciates the quiet forest paths and shaded trails that remain pleasant even on hot days – with views that reward every climb.

Whether you’re looking for an easy panoramic route, a tough uphill training ride, or a technical trail, Schenna and its surroundings offer something for every skill level – always with a breathtaking natural backdrop.

Right outside the hotel, you can set off in any direction: from the Etschtal Valley to the Hirzer, from Merano 2000 to the Passeiertal Valley. “The best thing is: no big planning or transfers is needed – just hop on and ride,” says Fips.

For even more variety, you can use the convenient bike shuttle to Lake Resia. From there, you can explore new routes, such as the Via Claudia Augusta through the Vinschgau Valley back to Merano – a true highlight for those who love long-distance rides or want an excursion with panoramic views and a gentle descent.

Fips’ top three bike tours:

1. To the Etschtal Valley and along the South Tyrolean Wine Road

Easy to moderate | approx. 50 km | 4–5 hrs

This leisurely panoramic tour begins in Schenna and leads you via Merano into the scenic Etschtal Valley. Following the Cycle Path along the Etsch River, you’ll pedal through wide orchards, gentle hills and charming wine villages nestled between vineyards and historic estates. This route is particularly stunning in Spring when the apple trees are in full bloom, or in Autumn during the grape harvest, when the landscape glows in warm colours. Fips’ tip: “This is the perfect tour to ease into your holiday. It’s relaxing, beautiful, and offers plenty of photo opportunities along the way. The quiet paths and soft terrain make it a favourite for many of our guests.”

2. From Schenna to the Passeiertal Valley – Nature along the Passer River

Moderate | approx. 35 km | 3.5–4 hrs

This scenic route takes you from Schenna into the unspoilt Passeiertal Valley, following the peaceful Passer Cycle Path. Ride alongside the clear mountain river through lush meadows, past old farms and through picturesque villages like St. Martin or St. Leonhard. Along the way, you’ll experience South Tyrol’s natural beauty, local culture, and a touch of alpine history. Fips says: “This tour is one of my favourites because it brings everything together – nature, tradition and beautiful landscapes. It’s the one I most often choose for my guided tours, because it truly impresses everyone.”

3. Sporty tour to Videgg – A tour for view lovers

Challenging | approx. 20 km | 3 hrs

  1. This sporty ride is for those who love a sporty tour – and a spectacular view as their reward. Starting from Schenna, you’ll ride up winding roads and forest trails until you reach the Alpine village of Videgg at around 1,500 m above sea level. The panoramic view over the Merano region is simply breathtaking – perfect for a well-earned rest at a rustic mountain hut. Fips’ insight: “For experienced riders, this tour is a must. It’s demanding, but the scenery is unbeatable. And if you’re on an e-MTB, you can enjoy the  ride with less effort and even more focus on the views.”
